Why do cars run rich and how do you fix it?

forkingspoons asked:

I asked my brother the car expert why it’s running rich and what I could do to fix it, he said he’s tired of cars and didn’t want to help me. I know nothing about cars except there’s explosions inside and the wheels turn. I know there must be a way to make it run better. Anyone know what would cause it to run rich and how to ix it? Also the idle is strange, it idles low then raises then lowers then raises over and over instead of a steady purr. Thanks for any help.

Cars run rich mostly because the O2 sensors are old or defective. Not sure about that idle problem. This and the idle problem are jobs for a trusted mechanic unless you’re good with cars. Or adventurous )

You did not state what kind, or year, or engine size of your vehicle never the less the first answer given is on the right tract. You may have up to four O2 sensors so you may have to have a diagnostic check on it. Further, and in conjunction with the O2 sensor(s) you my also need a tps (throttle position sensor). good luck
